EVN Macedonia, a leader in North Macedonia’s power distribution and supply industry, believes in powering more than just homes and businesses. The company is dedicated to social and environmental responsibility, guided by the 10 principles of the UN Global Compact. The company upholds the highest standards in human rights, environmental protection, and anti-corruption efforts. Committed to advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), EVN focuses on four key pillars, customers, employees, the environment, and society, ensuring a sustainable and inclusive future for all.
EVN Macedonia has been a pivotal player in North Macedonia's energy sector since its acquisition of the state-owned company in 2006. Over the years, the company has introduced numerous innovations to enhance the nation's energy infrastructure and services.
Focus on Sustainability
EVN Macedonia is committed to minimising its environmental impact through a range of initiatives focused on biodiversity preservation, waste management, and pollution prevention. One of its key efforts is the protection of endangered bird species by installing specially designed platforms on distribution grid facilities, in collaboration with NGOs and private companies. To address waste related to maintenance and reconstruction, EVN follows best practices in waste management by sorting waste on-site, properly collecting it, and storing it in temporary locations.
The company has also undertaken projects to identify, remove, and safely store transformers, oil barrels, and switches containing Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), as well as decontaminating affected equipment. Employees are encouraged to dispose of old electronic and electrical devices through eco-friendly initiatives, including the collection of batteries and electronic waste. To protect soil and groundwater, EVN uses secondary containment systems for oil and petroleum storage, applying absorbent materials and degreasers to mitigate any spills. Additionally, facilities using mazut for heating have been upgraded with an air-water-air heating and cooling system, which operates on electricity and produces no emissions.
Last year, EVN and Makpetrol installed fast chargers for electric vehicles, contributing to the development of electromobility in North Macedonia.
In fact, EVN made the earliest efforts for the development of electromobility in Macedonia. In the last 7 years, the company has installed around 40 electric vehicle chargers in public spaces. Their efforts continue with a strong focus on fast charging, as the main prerequisite for the seamless mobility over longer distances. The cooperation with Makpetrol is very important to the company due to shared values, and through their widespread network of pumps throughout the country, EVN can get closer to their main customer.
Commitment to Energy Education and Efficiency
EVN Macedonia is deeply committed to education and raising awareness about energy efficiency and sustainability. Over the past decade, the company has implemented a comprehensive educational program for children, teaching them about energy sources, the importance of electricity, and its safe and responsible use. This initiative has reached approximately 40,000 children from 352 schools, leading to the formation of 65 energy clubs across 42 municipalities in North Macedonia.
Furthering its educational efforts, EVN Macedonia established the Exhibition Center Matka, the only facility of its kind in North Macedonia, where visitors can explore the history, production, and distribution of energy through modern, interactive exhibits. Additionally, the company launched the Energy Efficiency Platform in collaboration with key stakeholders in the energy sector, offering a range of educational activities aimed at helping consumers optimize energy use in their homes and businesses.
Through seminars, events, online education, and social media campaigns, the platform has promoted best practices for energy efficiency. One of its standout achievements includes the creation of two educational programs, Energetska azbuka (Energy Alphabet) and Energetska matematika (Energy Mathematics), which present complex energy-related topics in a simple and engaging way, making energy education accessible to a wider audience.
"The ESG Adria Summit is a unique regional hub where theoretical discussions are translated into actionable solutions. At EVN Macedonia, we've long been committed to practical steps in sustainability, from pioneering PCB management in North Macedonia to investing in electromobility infrastructure. We believe the Summit will be a right platform where we can accelerate the implementation of sustainable strategies, which is vital for the region's progress", said Wolfgang Maier, President of the Management Board of EVN Macedonia.
Partnership with the ESG Adria Summit: Transforming the Region Together
EVN Macedonia’s support of the ESG Adria Summit 2025 is a natural extension of its efforts in sustainability and social responsibility.
“We're at a critical juncture in the efforts towards the green transition, and the energy companies in the Adria region have a unique opportunity to lead the way. The Summit is about bringing together the brightest minds and most committed organisations to drive tangible progress. I am glad EVN Macedonia is one of them”, said Biljana Braithwaite, CEO of Sustineri Partners, organiser of the Summit.
