Ray & Jules Solar Coffee is redefining the coffee industry. By combining sustainability with innovative technology, using their solar-powered roasting process, they are not only reducing CO2 emissions but also building a healthy, sustainable path for coffee farmers and consumers alike.

A New Approach to Roasting

The traditional method of coffee roasting is energy-intensive and contributes significantly to CO2 emissions. Founded by husband-and-wife duo Koen Bosmans and Sarah Bergé, Ray & Jules came into being with a simple yet grand goal: to disrupt food supply chains by eliminating 100 million tons of CO2 emissions per year. Ray & Jules has challenged this norm with their revolutionary “sunroaster” — the world’s first solar-powered coffee roaster. This innovation reduces energy consumption by 2.5 to 3 times, enabling the company to produce coffee that is not only better for the environment but also superior in taste. The slow-roasting process preserves the delicate flavours of the beans, resulting in a high-quality product that is enjoyed by coffee lovers across the globe.

While Ray & Jules has shown that sustainable roasting is viable, they know that to achieve real impact, the industry itself must evolve. That’s why they’ve designed their technology as a plug-in solution that can be easily integrated into existing production infrastructure.

To accelerate adoption, they offer it through an innovative pay-per-use model, reducing investment risks for large-scale roasters.

Changing the Planet Beyond Roasting

Ray & Jules isn't only about reducing their own environmental impact. Their business model is built on fair relationships with coffee producers, ensuring farmers are paid fairly and can participate more directly in the coffee trade. By collaborating with climate-resistant plantations and advocating for direct partnerships with producers, the company is helping to create a more sustainable and equitable coffee supply chain.

Their commitment to sustainability extends to their product offerings as well. By sourcing Fairtrade-certified coffee and exploring innovative ways to share their roasting technology, Ray & Jules is empowering others to follow their lead and adopt more eco-friendly practices.

“Our journey has been about challenging the status quo and proving that it’s possible to run a profitable business while taking care of the planet,” says Koen Bosmans, Director of Ray & Jules Solar Coffee. “The solar-powered roaster is just the beginning. Our goal is to inspire others to see that sustainability is not only good for the environment, it’s also good for business. Together, we can create a more resilient coffee industry—one that puts people and the planet first.”

Despite some challenges caused by global disruptions, Ray & Jules has built a 20,000-strong customer, partner, and ambassador base, proving the demand for clean roasting technology. Their cleantech sister company, CEE, has expanded to roasting cocoa and malt, and they continue scaling into new markets, including Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, North America, and Australia.
